Since 1951, Disney’s version of Alice in Wonderland has been a worldwide classic. Now, thanks to Tim Burton, Alice can become a worldwide classic with a slightly creepy and dark edge.

As in the 1951 version, Alice (Mia Wasikowska) follows the white rabbit (voiced by Michael Sheen) into a hole that sends her spiraling down to Wonderland. She runs into the Cheshire Cat (voiced by Stephen Fry) and Tweedledee and Tweedledum (both played by Matt Lucas with the help of special effects). She goes to a “mad” tea party and meets the Mad Hatter (played by a colorful Johnny Depp). She also meets the heavily smoking blue caterpillar (voiced by Alan Rickman).

However, in the 2010 version, Tim Burton takes Wonderland in a different direction. Alice isn’t the naive little girl she was before — In fact, she’s 19 and running away from her engagement party. Once she falls through the hole, we see that the Wonderland that we used to know and love has turned into ruins. Alice gets involved in a war between the White Queen (Anne Hathaway) and the Red Queen (Helena Bonham Carter) and is the only one who can end the war by defeating the Jabberwocky.

Despite the differences, Alice in Wonderland brings the message of accepting yourself (no matter how “mad” you are), this time through 3-D and CGI. This movie will leave you wanting more and wishing you could fall into Wonderland.
