Central Golf recently welcomed two new golfers, sisters: senior Jackie Yanez and freshman Tali Yanez. These athletes transferred from EStem to take advantage of Central’s 6A division status, which provides an opportunity to compete against some of the top teams in the state. Their father, Alex Yanez, has joined the team as the assistant coach, creating a dynamic family connection on and off the course.

Jackie and Tali spent their summer volunteering and honing their skills at First Tee, a nonprofit that emphasizes both life skills and golf. During this, Yanez has been by their side, actively supporting and motivating them during summer practices.

Golf wasn’t a major sport in his family, however, Yanez took an interest in the sport after tagging along with his father on the course and being influenced by a friend he met at the country club in his hometown.

“My first encounter with golf was back in Redding, California,” Yanez said. “My dad used to play, and I would go with him to the course. Seeing how challenging it was, I wanted to give it a try when I was about nine years old.”

“I started playing seriously at 21, and it became part of my life—not just for personal enjoyment but also for business,” he said. Over time, his passion for the sport evolved into a deep-seated motivation: his daughters. “My goal now is to see them succeed in collegiate golf, and if they want to turn pro, I will be there to support that dream.”

As a coach, Yanez has embraced the opportunity to impact young athletes beyond just his daughters.

“At Central, I have really been allowed to assist and be a part of the kids’ lives, helping them move forward in this challenging game,” he said.

While coaching his daughters adds a unique challenge to their relationship, Yanez navigates the balance of being both coach and father with caution.

Despite his role as coach, Yanez credits his eldest daughter, Virgie, a Division 1 golfer, with inspiring Jackie and Tali to strive for excellence. “I do not think I inspired them. Virgie set

the high standards, and both girls, being competitive, are determined to beat all their sister’s records.”

The Yanez family is driven by both a deep bond and a shared commitment to greatness in golf. With their father leading the way, Jackie and Tali are set to elevate Central Golf’s program in the upcoming season and compete in the state finals at the end of September.
