Splash of Color in the City
In a city filled with art, Little Rock’s isn’t always found in a museum. Murals and street art can be found wherever you go, but what’s behind the paint? Every piece of art has its own history and creative point of view, and taking a closer look can invoke all kinds of creativity.

On the side of the Fashion Exchange Women’s Upscale Resale off Cantrell depicts four women, all with different looks and styles. To me, this mural encapsulates sisterhood and sincerity. It’s authentic, and true to the store it’s adjacent to. Each woman has their own funky, special style, and it makes you feel happy just looking at it.

As you travel through 7th Street, you will instantly see a diverse collection of art. Local artists have worked together since 2015 to add to the once gray walls, and they took their job seriously. These murals represent social justice, inclusivity, and peace. Every single piece has its own history behind it, many of them coming to light in 2020 during Black Lives Matter protests. To me, these artworks are not just a splash of color, they’re a statement of integrity. So the next time you drive past it, take a closer look, and you might learn something new.

On Main Street, Mural Alley is exactly what it sounds like: a hidden gem of mini masterpieces scattered in this concealed alley. I found each of them very innovative and visually pleasing, especially the pink bearded dragon. The contrast between the more pastel colors versus the darker shades of each painting was distinctly unique.

Next to The Root Cafe holds this playful piece filled with wacky fruits and vegetables dancing in space. This artwork reminds me of a kid’s cartoon with lots of character put into it. It invokes a sense of childlike fun and whimsy. I can tell the artist put a lot of work and care into this piece, and it shows.

This is by far the most realistic and elaborate mural in Little Rock. Also on Main Street, this mural portrays a boy playing chess, the purple background standing out from the darker buildings surrounding the area. If the color and intricacy of this mural doesn’t catch your attention, the large scale definitely will.

In 2021, this Downtown Little Rock Mu- ral was given a makeover by local artists, creating food-inspired murals along the walls. Each one represents a culinary part of Little Rock, fitting the expansive num- ber of restaurants neighboring the park. Now, the park can be rented out for events, the artwork building a sense of community in the once empty area.

Wright Avenue holds one of the most historically relevant murals in Little Rock. As a resident of Arkansas, the racism surrounding Little Rock Nine will always be infamous to us. But this artwork ensures that their bravery and names are remembered, depicting each of the nine holding a book with their name on it.
Even with the onset of storms and rough weather, there’s some things that the rain can’t wash away. These murals, old and new, shape Little Rock and add color to our everyday life.

Driving downtown, my eyes instantly go to the vibrant colors popping off of a building on West 6th Street. The mural feels empowering each time I pass by, but as I look closer I notice all of the little details the artist put into it. The patterns on the suits, the hair textures, and the contrast between the pitch black wall and the bright suits all contribute to the vision.
