As the annual fall musical, “Little Shop of Horrors,” comes around, seniors Terry Brown and Asoni Givens begin their anxious journey by stepping into their roles of their characters during the auditioning process.

“I was happy to be in the final cast list since this is my senior year, and I want to make sure that I leave an impact and bring other people to join the theater department,” Brown said.

When Brown found out he made the final cast list, he was worried that he wouldn’t make the perfect narrator for the show. However, his nerves quickly resided since he’s been in the theater department since his freshmen year.

“I just wanted to make sure that I was able to get a position in the show. And, just show off for our department,” Brown said.

Since he is able to be the person that represents his department, he encourages students to not fake a version of what you can do and what you are. Additionally, he encourages students to practice and make sure they are prepared. In his role as narrator Brown strives to have an influential presence on stage.

“I will likely spend more time on my songs and making sure that the character is visible than I did before,” Brown said.

Recalling his experience of getting prepared for the show, he wished he was more involved in the process of understanding the song list. Along with Brown, Givens, playing the role of Wino, resonated with the same feelings.

“I was shocked,” Givens said. “I think I could have gone in there better, and I just messed up.”

Givens said he was in his head about the audition, and it caused him to feel tense about the process. This led him to become more uncertain in undertaking the role of Wino.

“I think my head was too in the clouds, and I wasn’t all the way there, so going into it, I would have done a lot more,” Givens said.

Givens said he felt tense, which led him to become stunned when the final cast list came out.

“I believe I feel like the character just called me,” said Givens.

During that time Givens thought he should have studied all essential pieces needed for the audition. The role got him out of his comfort zone although he was anxious.

“I think I was nervous about the music, not about the actual audition, but how to perform the music and show my character,” Givens said.

His challenge wasn’t about impressing those who are watching but getting to bring the role of Wino to life.
