The Summer I Turned Pretty: Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah

New season, but the same argument
The Summer I Turned Pretty: Team Conrad or Team Jeremiah

All over the internet, ‘The Summer I Turned Pretty’ fans are divided over which team to choose – but let’s be honest, Conrad has loved her from the start. The show features a young woman named Isabel Conklin, Belly for short, and her journey through a complex love triangle with two of her childhood best friends, Conrad and his brother Jeremiah. Jenny Han, the author of the books and one of the directors of the show, has a common theme in all of her work: love triangles. Complex love triangles can be seen in her other books like ‘To All the Boys I Loved Before’ and shows like ‘X.O. Kitty.’ The show was all the rage when it first came out because of the number of fans who read the books and their thoughts on seeing it adapted into a show. Despite all the drama and plot twists in both the books and the show, the most controversial part of the show is whether Belly should be with Conrad or Jeremiah. In my opinion, Team Conrad is the way to go when it comes to Belly choosing her future husband, due to his maturity and deeper connection with her.

Jeremiah is a sweet, loving, and kind character in the first two seasons, but he starts to change his ways in the third season. Going into the third season, Jeremiah starts to make poor decisions, such as cheating on her twice over spring break while they were on a “break”. Jeremiah’s jealousy and insecurity towards Belly and Conrad’s relationship indicate that he is not ready for a serious relationship with Belly. Specifically in the second season, while Conrad and Belly are having an emotional moment on the deck, Jeremiah chooses to disrupt them with fireworks. This further proves that Jeremiah’s jealousy of his brother will get in the way of him ever truly loving Belly. On the other hand, Conrad is portrayed as a complex and emotionally guarded character in the first and second seasons. At the beginning of the third season, however, he is coming back from college and is more open and overall happier. While Jeremiah cares about Belly, Conrad has always been there for her through the ups and downs. To start, Conrad feels for Belly on a deeper level and tries to communicate with her through the problems they may face or conflicts that may happen. Secondly, Conrad is more mature than his brother. For example, he maintained his long-lasting love for Belly in all three seasons while also focusing on his future. Lastly, Conrad and Belly share a more real and lasting chemistry and connection. Specifically, in season three, Conrad shows his commitment to Belly by sending her letters while she is in Paris. This act of love shows that he is committed to her and that he will always be there for her. Overall, they understand each other in a deeper way and are committed to each other in the long term.

While some may believe that Conrad is the better choice, others believe that Jeremiah is the better choice for Belly. All throughout each season, Jeremiah always expresses his feelings and emotions with Belly openly. He was never afraid to put himself out there and show his feelings. He also makes tense situations seem more fun, and he brings people together. Specifically in season 2, when the beach house is for sale, he tries to make the situation lighter by suggesting throwing a big party for the last night they have together. Another detail in the show that earns Jeremiah votes is how fans see Conrad as the rude brother in the first two seasons. Many viewers started recognizing his moodiness and poor communication. While in reality, he was struggling with his mom having cancer and his family falling apart. But no matter what, he was always there for Belly when she needed him, even when they weren’t on good terms. Jeremiah might offer more fun and playfulness, but Conrad offers connection, deeper feelings, and loving chemistry that will last forever. They were never and will never be a perfect couple, but that is what makes their love more complex and real. But no matter how divided fans are, in my opinion, Team Conrad was and will always be the better choice.
