Snowed In

Students make the most of snow days during week-long school closure
LRSD schools were closed Monday through Friday (Jan. 26-30) because of "continued inclement weather conditions," according the LRSD Live Feed. Senior Zora Key noticed the untouched, smooth layer of snow on the football field while on a walk with her father and captured the scenery for her boyfriend Justin Foster. "We frequently take walks around the school because it's about a mile from my house," Key said. "Justin plays football, so I thought he might want a picture of the field since it was totally covered without any footprints."

Sophomore Imanuelle Joy hung out with her friends outside River City Coffee on Kavanaugh Sunday, Jan. 25. To stay warm, Joy and five of her friends huddled together while waiting for another. “I’ve been going outside and hanging out with friends every day, both inside and outside. I’ve sledded, built a snowman, taken walks in the woods, and just hung out at friends’ houses and coffee shops. The rest of the time at home, I’ve just been doing homework and practicing violin,” said Joy.

Senior Zora Key spent time with her family during the snow days. Key and her mom painted two paintings each–with watercolor supplies and paper at the kitchen table. “My mom was also home from work, so we painted for a couple hours,” Key said. “I’m not much of a painter, but I made a little squirrel and I was pretty proud of it.”

At Forest Heights Elementary School, junior Katie Allbritton went sledding down the hills with juniors Calvin Austin and Copeland Stuart. While she spent most of day outside sledding, she enjoyed her time inside as well. “My favorite indoor activity was playing Imposter with Sloan, Calvin, and their mom. We also had a bunch of snow ice cream, which was great,” Allbritton said.

While the snow was still fresh Sunday, Jan. 25, seniors Ruby Smith and her friend Ava Johnson take pictures in the snow. The two spent a total of seven days together. “We knew there was gonna be snow, so we wanted to get snowed-in together,” Smith said. “I moved into her home for a week…We played video games. We watched all the Harry Potter movies in order, and we ate a lot of food.”

After sledding for four hours Wednesday, Jan. 28, senior Joanne Lee poses for a picture with her friends. “I was really looking forward to meeting them like the entire day because I hadn’t seen anyone in forever,” Lee said. The group decided to meet at Lee’s house because of the big hills in her neighborhood. “We ran to the top of the hill, and it was just like, ‘y’all wanna race?’ And we were like ‘duh,'” said Lee. “And so we raced at least like 10 times before we even started a conversation with each other.”

Sophomore Lupita Cabrera spent her days off with her brother playing in the snow. “When I first found out school was canceled, my brother and I decided to go outside to walk around and play in the snow before it melted into ice. Once it did turn into ice, my favorite activity was sliding on it,” Cabrera said. Because their car was stuck in the ice, Cabrera and her brother walked to the grocery store to get items for dinner, stopping on the way to make snow angels.
