Can we expect this in coming years? Oprah, has considered entering the 2020 presidential race. (Photo by Mary Silzer)

Oprah Winfrey’s tear-jerking, inspiring speech at the 2018 Golden Globes has made waves throughout the media and sparked this question: Should Oprah be the next President of the United States? This is just one of many instances in which the public sees a redeeming quality in an influential individual and jokingly-but, in this case, not completely jokingly-considers the celebrity for the presidential race.

Consider Waka Flocka Flame and Kanye West. Fans admire Waka’s carefree attitude and Kanye’s tendency to tell it like it is, so, of course, the only logical action the public sees is to snag them a seat in the Oval Office. These rumors are usually exacerbated by said celebrity tweeting something cryptic, exemplified by Kanye’s tweet which simply read, “#2024.”

Oprah has proven that she is well-qualified for a number of positions, such as talk show host and social media influencer, and she is an eloquent, progressive-minded speaker, but do these qualities completely prepare someone for the executive job? I, as well as 76 percent of fellow American voters, say no According to Breitbart.com. An estimated net worth of $2.8 billion and an endorsement for Weight Watchers are not valid qualifications for President of the United States.

AP US History teacher Chuck West shares a similar opinion.

“I love and respect Oprah, but I do not think that she is the best candidate,” West said. “People are confusing liking someone for thinking they’re qualified.”

He compared Oprah to President Trump in terms of qualification.

“I did not think Trump was qualified,” West said. “I think she’d do better than him, but I still don’t think she’s qualified.”

“Oprah 2020,” senior Natalie Smith, one of two Young Democrats presidents, said.

“And Jimmy Fallon for Vice President,” Social Studies teacher Adam Kirby said.

So, although Oprah Winfrey has an impressive resume, but I don’t expect President of the United States to be added to it any time soon.
