Bad Bunny’s Super Bowl Halftime Show took place on Feb. 8 in Santa Clara, California. The show was sponsored by Apple Music and it lasted around 13 minutes. Bad Bunny’s genre of music is reggaeton. I’ve never heard this genre of music before. Since it was my first time experiencing his music, it really threw me off, because it’s not something I’m used to listening to. As a person who has a very diverse music taste, from Miley Cyrus to Sleeptoken, reggaeton isn’t something I enjoyed.
I heard so many good things about Bad Bunny and expected the performance to exceed my expectations, but it did not reach them for me at all. The way it started off was good–I really enjoyed the beat–but the more I got into the show, the more I started to dislike it. Overall, the pacing and setting of the performance highly confused me. I felt oversimulated trying to keep up with everything. First, Bad Bunny was on top of a house, then he fell in, and then somehow walked all the way to a truck and got on top of it. The flow of his words and the speed of the music didn’t mesh well. I felt as if he was chasing the beat instead of staying on top of it. I feel that most of the people who enjoyed his performance are regular listeners of his music. However, as a first time listener, it is not something I would listen to again.
I did love the concept of the wedding taking place in the middle of the performance. I was surprised when I found out it was a real wedding. I thought it was staged because Bad Bunny’s song was about love.
Overall the show wasn’t something I hated, but it’s something I wouldn’t watch again if I had the choice. I personally wouldn’t recommend the show to people who don’t listen to Bad Bunny on the regular.
My recommendation for the next person to perform in the Super Bowl Halftime Show is Tyler, the Creator. I really enjoy his music. His beats and the flow of his words always line up perfectly. My favorite songs from him are “New Magic Wand” and “Are We Still Friends.” Hopefully next year Tyler can perform and I will actually enjoy watching the show.
