A Killer Debut
His & Hers: A Review

“His & Hers,” a new thriller limited series, debuted on Netflix Jan. 8. The show follows a separated couple, Jack Harper and Anna Andrews, as they individually investigate a murder in their small town. The couple separated a year prior due to the tragic death of their newborn daughter. The show was adapted from Alice Feeney’s “His & Hers: A Novel” which was released July 28, 2020. The series was directed by William Oldroyd, known for “Lady Macbeth” (2016) and “Eileen” (2023).

News reporter Anna Andrews, played by Tessa Thompson, returns to her small southern town of Dahlonega, Georgia, after a year-long sabbatical. However, she doesn’t receive a warm welcome and instead finds the murder of her old friend Rachel, her mother succumbing to Alzheimer’s, and her husband Detective Jack Harper, played by Jon Bernthal, volatile and already on the case. As the case unravels, disturbing motives and intertwined backstories are revealed, leaving the audience to suspect each and every character–especially Andrews and Harper.

The six episode series is filled with tension and betrayal at every turn, heightened by the original score composed by Mac Quayle and featured songs like “Toxic by Britany Spears and “Wicked Gameby Chris Isaak. Drawing the audience in further, the story is told through the eyes of two extremely unreliable narrators, constantly switching between suspecting Andrews and Harper, to whoever they each were investigating at the moment. The killer continues to murder victims, all of whom happen to be members of Andrews’ toxic high school friend group, leaving everyone to wonder if she was next or responsible.

A positive attribute of the show is that the cast is small and easy to follow. Each character has a strong connection to the storyline, and their role in the main storyline is clear. However, the series is very short, so some plot points could be expanded on further. Almost all of the characters are complex, but the audience isn’t able to truly understand or watch them grow as characters because of the short duration of the show. A primary example is Harper’s new partner Detective Priya Patel, played by Sunita Mani. Her main role in the series is to investigate the murder, and later in the series she begins to suspect her own partner. However, her moral high ground is tested with a surprising move at the very end of the show, revealing a depth to her character that could have been much more developed throughout the show to add more tension and shock to her storyline. Harper and Patel’s investigation comes to a climax in the final episodes with several twists that tie the case together. Some have gone to social media to praise how surprising the reveal of the murderer is, while others complained that they expected it all along. Though the ending may have been predictable, the reveal was a good way to wrap up the story.

Overall, the show provides a compelling story about revenge and healing relationships that hooks the audience. If you’re looking for a good show to binge, I would definitely recommend “His & Hers.”
