The NBC fan favorite show Friends was rumored to leave the streaming platform Netflix, however, on Dec. 3, 2018, Netflix decided to save itself from losing many customers by promising that the show will remain throughout 2019.

“The Holiday Armadillo has granted your wish: Friends will still be there for you in the US throughout 2019,” Netflix tweeted.

While this reference to the episode “The one with the Holiday Armadillo” brought relief to millions of fans, it comes with a cost. Netflix did not mean to cause chaos within the Internet by taking the show off of their website; they were doing it to save money. Their decision to keep the show for another year will cost them $100 million, according to The New York Times.

“I never thought they would take it off because it seemed like it was very popular,” sophomore Olivia Hayden said.

Olivia was not wrong to think that it would never leave because of its popularity. However, popularity was not the reason Netflix would remove the show. Rumors of a competing streaming website owned by Warner Brother, the same company that owns NBC, was what made Netflix decide to remove Friends and many other shows.

At the end of the day, fans of the show are able to rerun episodes off of Netflix up until the end of 2019. That means more dark humor from Chandler, more stress from Ross and Rachel’s relationship, more craziness from Monica, and most importantly, more charm from Joey and Phoebe.
